I absolutely loved this book. I've seen the movie a few times, but it had been a few years since I'd seen it. The characters are so eccentric, but real. I'm not sure if it's because I've seen the movie in the past, but I could actually picture the characters as I read. What makes the book even more interesting is that it is true, based on a murder that occurred in Savannah, GA in the early 1980's.
John Berendt is a journalist who visits Savannah and likes the town and people so much he starts spending more time there, eventually renting out a carriage house and getting involved with the people and happenings, he's an acquaintance of the man charged with murder. This is not just an accounting of the murder and trial that follows, it reads like a novel and you'll fall in love with the characters. The book is very well written and it makes me want to move to Savannah myself.
Highly recommended
Rating 4.75/5
(while reading, I realized that the author is a New Yorker (gasp!) and not a southerner. However, he was a resident of Savannah for 8 years during these events so I'm going to say he was an "honorary southerner")

Yes, he is a southerner indeed! :)
Great to see you get one done and enjoy it at the same time. *little southern jig*
